A great life, lived in terrific spirit

This week is the anniversary of one of the club’s most favourite characters, Russell Haigh, who died 20 years ago this week.

Russell’s name still lives on, with The Haigh family generously supporting the club in the form of a bursary scheme which has provided opportunities to so many of Newdigate’s young cricketers. This legacy is one we should all cherish, and the club is so thankful to the family for providing this initiative for nearly two decades.

Russell joined the club in 1999, having recently moved into the village with his father Chris. A naturally gifted sportsman, Russell threw himself into everything the village had to offer, as an active member in the snooker, pool, football and of course cricket team. Russell became the regular opening batsman for the 1st Team, and was awarded the captaincy in 2004.

Over and above the cricket, it was Russell’s social manner that made him an endearing and much-loved raconteur. He was charismatic, a natural comedian, with a penchant for fancy dress, which meant he left smiles on faces wherever he went.

However, this did not detract from Russell’s competitive edge; his work hard, play hard attitude gave him natural leadership qualities, which drew people to the team and the club, many of whom are still playing for Newdigate today.

Russell was an excellent tourist (in cricketing terms) and many will reminisce on the stories of our trips to Somerset, with Russell leading the post-match entertainment in both Dunster and Minehead!

His other sporting love was golf, and the club still remembers him with an annual Golf Day, named in his honour, which will be taking place in a few weeks’ time.

Russell’s death was a tragic loss to both the club and the village. He was a whirlwind of energy and fun, that has left a big hole, which will never be filled. All that knew him miss him dearly, he lived a great life in terrific spirit.

Rest in Peace Russ
